MANILA, Philippines – Isang bagong tuklas na helmet orchid species sa mossy forests ng Mount Apo ang itinuring na critically endangered matapos makapagtala ang mga mananaliksik ng 10 mature individuals lamang mula sa iisang known site.
Ang species na Corybas apoensis ay pormal na inilarawan nina Kier C. Agad ng University of the Philippines Mindanao; Archelito L. Mallari ng Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Davao del Sur; Danilo N. Tandang ng National Museum of the Philippines; Rene Alfred Anton Bustamante ng Philippine Taxonomic Initiative, Inc.; at Daryl S. Salas ng University of Southeastern Philippines.
Ayon sa pag-aaral, unang sinuyod ng mga mananaliksik ang lugar noong Nobyembre 2023 ngunit dahon at iba pang non-flowering parts lamang ang kanilang nakolekta dahil nalanta na ang mga bulaklak.
Kalaunan, nakakuha sila ng flowering specimens noong Pebrero at Agosto 2024, at Oktubre 2025, ngunit nakapagtala lamang ng “only 10 mature individuals from a single known site.”
“Corybas apoensis is observed to thrive in mosses and humus along the ridge mossy forest,” ayon sa mga mananaliksik.
“Based on the very small population size and its restriction to a single site, Corybas apoensis is here qualifie[d] as ‘critically endangered.’”
Sinabi ng mga mananaliksik na nanganganib ang species dahil sa napakaliit nitong populasyon, makitid na habitat specificity, posibleng pagkatapak o disturbance sa access trail, at pagkasira ng microhabitat nito.
“No capsules or fruiting individuals were observed during the surveys; therefore, natural fruit set remains unconfirmed,” dagdag nila.
Ayon sa pag-aaral, kahawig ng Corybas apoensis ang Corybas viridisepalus, isang helmet orchid species mula sa Papua New Guinea, ngunit naiiba ito dahil sa ilang natatanging katangian, kabilang ang rough texture ng dorsal petal at ibang ornamentation ng labellum.
“With the description of Corybas apoensis, there are now 10 recognized Corybas species in the Philippines, two of which are from Mindanao Island,” nakasaad sa pag-aaral.
