IN a city where social welfare is paramount, Caloocan Mayor Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan continues to lead with compassion through his “Bigasan Package Program”, a key initiative designed to uplift the lives of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
In line with his vision of “Aksyon at Malasakit,” Malapitan is addressing the economic challenges of Persons with Disabilities, senior citizens, solo parents and returning Overseas Filipino Workers through tangible support.
Recently, the program distributed over 100 rice packages to families in need. Each package includes six sacks of rice, a weighing scale, and plastic bags — essentials that allow families to start a small-scale rice retailing business.
This isn’t just about receiving rice; it’s about giving recipients the tools to generate income, ensuring they have the means to provide for their families every day.
What makes this initiative even more impactful is its focus on addressing child labor. In collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment, Mayor Along’s program also extends to the parents of over 30 child laborers.
Through the rice packages, these parents are provided with the opportunity to earn a livelihood that prevents their children from having to work at an early age.
By offering alternatives, the program empowers families to break free from the cycle of child labor, ensuring that children can go to school instead of working.
His Bigasan Package Program demonstrates that true leadership is about more than just managing a city — it’s about creating lasting solutions to address poverty and injustice.
