MANILA, Philippines – Nagkasundo ang Senado at Mababang Kapulungan na dagdagan ng P12.3 bilyon ang badyet ng 113 State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) upang tuluyan nang maipatupad ang Free Higher Education Act sa 2026 General Appropriations Act.
Ayon kay Senador Loren Legarda, chairman ng Seante committee on Higher Education na matapos ang ilang rtaong apela ng SUCs na tugunan ng Kongreso ang budget deficits sa implementasyon ng Free Higher Education Act, matutupad na ang kanilang kahilingan.
Sinabi ni Legarda na bilang vice chairman ng House committee on appropriations, pinangunahan ni , Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Legarda Leviste ang Pre-Plenary Budget Hearing para sa SUCs.
Hiniling ng SUCs sa Kongreso na pondohan ang implementasyon ng Free Higher Education Act sa 2026 budget, at iisponsoran ito ni Leviste ang deliberasyon ng badyet sa plenaryo.
“House Committee on Appropriations Chair Mika Suansing confirmed that the P12.31 billion budget deficit for SUCs will be funded in the 2026 budget: P7.82 billion from the Higher Education Development Fund of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and an additional P4.49 billion to be approved by Congress,” ayon kay Legarda.
Sinabi pa ni Legarda na kinumpirma din ni Senate Finance Committee Chair Sherwin Gatchalian na susuportahah ng Senado ang pagtataas ng badyet sa SUCs sa 2026 upang pondohan ng libreng kolehiyo sa bansa.
Naunang inorganisa ni Legarda ang pulong sa lahat ng SUC president at CHED Chair Shirley Agrupis upang talakayin ang susunod na hakbang para sa dagdag ng badyet para sa SUCs kapag sinimulan ang deliberasyon sa Senado.
“According to a presentation by Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) President Dr. Tirso Ronquillo, there is a P12.3 billion funding shortfall for SUCs until 2025, and an estimated additional P3.5 billion will be needed to support the expected increase in student enrollment in 2026,” ayon kay Legarda.
“Although the Free Higher Education Act has already helped millions of students, the lack of funding limits the number of slots SUCs can offer, depriving an estimated 200,000 qualified students of the opportunity to study in SUCs,” giit pa ng senadora.
Kapwa nagkasundo sina Legarda at Gatchalian na suportahan ang apela ng SUCs na itaas ang kanilang badyet na nakatakdang isalang sa deliberasyon sa mga susunod na araw at inaatasan tataas ang libreng edukasyon upang mapagsilbihan ang mas nakakaraming mamamayan. Ernie Reyes
