MALABON Mayor Jeannie Sandoval has urged ‘Malabueños’ to be more responsible, vigilant, and informed viewers in today’s rapidly evolving television and media landscape as the city government continues to strengthen its efforts in promoting media literacy and protecting the welfare of its residents.

The mayor’s call came following the successful conduct of the ‘Responsableng Panonood’ RP Program led by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board at the Malabon National Highschool held early this week.

Sandoval expressed gratitude to MTRCB under the stewardship of its chairman, Lala Sotto, for spearheading the program as they noted that such initiatives would greatly contribute to strengthening community awareness and protecting the welfare of the youth.

“With the continued partnership between the local government and national agencies, Malabon remains committed to empowering its citizens to be responsible, informed, and critical consumers of media,” Sandoval said.

According to the mayor, the RP Program gathered students and educators to promote media literacy and responsible television consumption.

On the part of the MTRCB, it said that through its ‘RP PROTECT’ component, the initiative emphasized the importance of age-appropriate viewing, proper screen time management, and active parental guidance.

Sotto explained that their office encourages the masses to effectively guide children’s media consumption through age-appropriate viewing, screen time regulation, media literacy, and positive role modeling to foster safe and healthy viewing habits.

“The program seeks to promote community awareness and advocate for active participation in promoting responsible viewership, consistent with the constitutional and legal mandate of the MTRCB to protect the welfare of the youth,” the MTRCB chief added.

Building on the insights from the program, Sandoval highlighted the critical role of families and communities in shaping healthy viewing habits, especially among the youth.

The city’s first female chief executive further encouraged her constituents to go beyond passive consumption and take an active role in evaluating the content they engage with.

Aside from top city officials and Sotto, also present during the event were MTRCB board members Keats Musngi, Richard Reynoso, Cecile Villarosa, and Almira Muhlach and City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office staff.
