MANILA, Philippines – Walang nakikitang problema si Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. sa pag-upo ni Senador Francis “Chiz” Escudero bilang presiding officer ng Senate impeachment court para sa nalalapit na paglilitis kay Pangalawang Pangulo Sara Duterte.
Sa panayam sa Kazan, Russia bago bumalik sa bansa, sinabi ni Marcos na hindi dapat kuwestiyunin ang kakayahan ni Escudero na pangunahan ang paglilitis dahil siya rin ang may-akda ng mga tuntuning ginagamit ng Senado sa impeachment proceedings.
“As a matter of fact, the rules that were adopted by the Senate were the rules that Senator Chiz wrote during last year’s impeachment, when they were handling the last year’s impeachment complaint,” ani Marcos.
“So, in terms of his ability to be able to run the trial, I don’t think that’s in doubt,” dagdag niya.
Nauna nang inendorso ng Senate majority bloc si Escudero bilang presiding officer dahil sa kanyang legal na kaalaman at karanasan sa mga impeachment proceedings.
Kinumpirma rin ni Senador Panfilo Lacson na nagkaroon na ng paunang pagkakasundo ang bagong Senate majority bloc upang ihalal si Escudero sa posisyon. Ang pormal na halalan ay isasagawa kapag muling nagtipon ang Senado bilang impeachment court sa Hulyo 6.
Binasura rin ni Marcos ang mga puna laban kay Escudero kaugnay ng dati nitong pamumuno sa impeachment court, at iginiit na ang pagtigil ng nakaraang impeachment proceedings laban kay Duterte ay dulot ng desisyon ng Korte Suprema at hindi ng naging paghawak ni Escudero sa proseso.
“Those are opinions. I don’t think that reflects in any way on how he will do. If you remember, the reason that the impeachment trial last year came to a stop was because of the Supreme Court decision. And that had nothing to do with Senator Chiz),” aniya. RNT
