MANILA, Philippines – Mariing itinanggi ng Department of Foreign Affairs ang pahayag ng umano’y Chinese scholars na pag-aari ng China ang Batanes sa pamamagitan ng Taiwan, sabay-diin na matagal nang malinaw ang soberanya ng Pilipinas sa lalawigan.
“Flights of fancy should not be dignified with a response. Nevertheless, the Philippines’ sovereignty over Batanes is settled and not up for debate,” pahayag ni Foreign Affairs spokesperson Analyn Ratonel sa text message sa mga reporter nitong Huwebes ng gabi.
“The Philippines will not entertain revisionist claims over its territory and calls on so-called scholars to focus their energies on genuine, good-faith studies of the region,” dagdag niya.
Binanggit din ni Ratonel na ang Philippine-approved consular district ng Chinese Consulate General sa Laoag mismo ay kinabibilangan ng lalawigan ng Batanes.
Sa ulat ng Guangdong-based media na Newsgd, binanggit ang mga Chinese scholar mula sa iba’t ibang unibersidad sa China na umano’y “unanimously” nagsabing ang “Batan Islands constitute a natural geographical extension of Taiwan, with sovereignty belonging to China.”
Sa hiwalay na pahayag, tinawag naman ni Department of National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. ang naturang mga pahayag bilang “disinformation” at “outlandish narratives.” Dave Baluyot
