MANILA, Philippines – Ipinagtanggol ng Department of Justice (DOJ) ang National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) kaugnay ng muling pag-iimbestiga sa umano’y iregularidad sa ₱50-milyong SEA Games cauldron na itinayo para sa 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Ayon sa DOJ, “The Department has full confidence that the NBI will continue to carry out its work with the professionalism, integrity, and independence expected of it.”
Ito ay matapos sabihin nina Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano at Sen. Pia Cayetano na layunin umano ng imbestigasyon na “intimidate” sila bilang mga senator-judges sa impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte.
Binigyang-diin ng DOJ na may kapangyarihan ang NBI na magsagawa ng imbestigasyon batay sa reklamo o sa sarili nitong inisyatiba.
Ayon kay NBI Director Melvin Matibag, muling binuksan ang kaso matapos makatanggap ang NBI ng bagong ebidensya na nagsasabing may ₱10 bilyon umanong nagastos na hindi naipaliwanag.
Itinanggi naman ni Alan Cayetano ang pagkakasangkot sa proyekto at iginiit na ang pagpapatupad nito ay nasa Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) at hindi sa Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) na kanyang pinamunuan.
Samantala, sinabi ni Sen. Pia Cayetano na ang hakbang ng NBI ay “not acceptable, and possibly contemptible.”
Bilang tugon, sinabi ng DOJ: “The Department fully respects the views expressed by (Pia). We assure her and the public that the actions of the National Bureau of Investigation are grounded solely in its mandate and the rule of law.” Jocelyn Tabangcura-Domenden
