ALARMING reports have recently emerged from within the Bureau of Fire Protection in Region 3, raising serious concerns about alleged corruption in the Bureau’s recruitment and promotion processes.

Whistleblowers claim that some fire officers have been asked to pay bribes to secure rank promotions, while prospective recruits are said to have been pressured to provide significant sums of money just to be considered for employment.

Individuals such as Jhong, Lino, and Ging are reportedly connected to these allegations, either through direct involvement or as witnesses to the practices in question.

According to multiple sources, officers may have been required to pay amounts between ₱30,000 and ₱50,000 for promotions, while new recruits have allegedly been asked to pay up to ₱300,000 just for the chance to be hired.

If proven true, these allegations would point to serious misconduct within the BFP, with major implications for those in positions of authority.

BFP director C/Supt. Jesus Fernandez and BFP Region 3 Chief Col. Manuel Galono, as leaders responsible for overseeing the Bureau’s operations, must be held accountable for ensuring that such unethical practices do not take place under their watch.

The failure to address these concerns would reflect poorly on their leadership and erode the public’s trust in the Bureau’s ability to serve with integrity.

Furthermore, similar reports from other regions suggest that the problem may extend beyond Region 3. One individual claimed to have been asked for ₱150,000, while another alleged demands for ₱700,000 in exchange for a job within the BFP.

These patterns raise the possibility that this issue could be more widespread, highlighting the urgent need for a full investigation.

Given the seriousness of these allegations, it is crucial that Sen. Panfilo Lacson, chair of the Senate Committee on Accountability and Good Governance, take immediate action to investigate these claims thoroughly.

The BFP must be restored to an institution that upholds transparency, fairness and integrity. The Filipino people deserve a Fire Bureau free from corruption, where decisions are made based on merit and public service.
