MANILA, Philippines- Bahagi ang Pag-asa Island at Pag-asa Cays ng Pilipinas.
Ito ang iginiit ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) sabay sabing ang bansa ay may karapatan na magsagawa ng scientific research sa lugar nang walang panghihimasok mula sa Tsina.
Ang pahayag na ito ng DFA ay bilang tugon sa sinabi ng Chinese Embassy sa Manila na ginawa lamang ng Chinese vessel 21559 ang dalawang beses na pagbomba ng water cannon at pagsagi ng BRP Datu Sanday dahil ito’y nasa katubigan ng Tsina.
“The fundamental fact is that Pag-asa Island and the Pag-asa Cays form part of the Kalayaan Island Group, which is an integral part of the Philippines over which it has longstanding sovereignty and jurisdiction,” ang sinabi ng departamento.
Winika ng DFA na ang Pilipinas ay may karapatan na magsagawa ng routine maritime operations sa katubigan nito at maaaring magpatuloy pa ito.
Sinabi ng Chinese Embassy na ang research mission ay isang “serious violation” ng 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.
Sa ilalim ng deklarasyon, “parties committed to exercise self-restraint in conducting activities that would complicate or escalate disputes in the South China Sea, part of which is the West Philippine Sea.”
Sinabi pa ng embahada na ang Pilipinas “so-called scientific research missions included media crews, seemingly to stage and record the events, resembling film production rather than genuine research” inakusahan nito ang Maynila na nagpapaapoy ng tensyon.
Inakusahan naman ng DFA ang pahayag na ito ng embahada, binigyang-diin na ang research activities ay isang “valid exercise of Philippine sovereignty” at ‘consistent’ sa international law, kabilang na ang UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
“China has no right to object much less interfere with these lawful and routine activities,” giit ng departamento.
