MANILA, Philippines – Kasunod ng paglalabas ng writ of kalikasan sa paglalabas ng genetically modified rice at eggplant products sa Pilipinas, hinimok ng Greenpeace Southeast Asia (Greenpeace) ang Department of Agriculture na isaprayoridad nito ang pagpapalakas sa sustainable agricultural solutions.
“The onus is on the DA to instead promote sustainable agricultural solutions that would prioritize nutrition, provide ample resources for our farmers, and ensure resiliency as we face the worsening impacts of the climate crisis,” saad sa pahayag ng Greenpeace campaigner Wilhelmina Pelegrina.
Ito ay kasunod ng kautusan ng Court of Appeals (CA) sa
University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) na cease and desist mula sa mga aktibidad na may kaugnayan sa Bacillus thuringiensis o Bt Eggplant, at cease and desist sa Philippine Rice Research Institute (PRRI) sa mga aktibidad nitong may kinalaman sa genetically modified (GM), Vitamin A-enriched Golden Rice.
Binawi rin ang biosafety permit para sa commercial propagation ng Golden Rice.
Sinunod ng korte ang precautionary principle, na nagsasabing ang mga aktibidad na magdudulot ng banta ng seryoso at irreversible damage sa kalikasan na “scientifically plausible but uncertain,” ay dapat na iwasan o pigilan.
Tumanggi namang magkomento ang DA patungkol dito.
Samantala, sinabi ni Pelegrina na ang desisyon ng CA ay “monumental win” para sa mga Filipino at mga magsasaka.
“Greenpeace has constantly noted that GM crops have been approved in the Philippines despite the lack of robust data on safety assessments submitted by proponents,” aniya.
“GM crops have never been proven safe, and have hindered necessary progress on climate resilient ecological agriculture that keeps the control of seeds on our farmers,” dagdag pa nito.
Sa 143 pahinang desisyon, sinabi ng CA na “no consensus could be reached on the safety or harmful effects of golden rice and Bt Eggplant on humans and the environment.”
Nag-ugat ang kaso sa petisyong inihain ng Magsasaka At Siyentipiko para sa Pag-Unlad Agrikultura, Greenpeace, apat iba pang grupo at pitong indibidwal.
Noong Abril 2023, naglabas na rin ng writ of kalikasan ang Korte SUprema para ihinto ang paglalabas ng Bt Eggplant at Golden Rice. RNT/JGC
