MANILA, Philippines – Nagpahayag ng intensyon si Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson na harangin o pigilan ang anumang mosyon na magpapahinto o magpapaantala sa Senado na mag-convene bilang impeachment court.
Ito ay sa oras na makarating umano sa Senado ang impeachment complaint laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte at may hakbang para pigilan ito.
“For context, I did not say I will not oppose and vote against any motion to stop or delay the convening of the Senate into an impeachment court, if it comes to that.”
“That said, the Senate is a collegial, deliberative body that is always ruled by the vote of the majority,” sinabi pa ni Lacson.
Sa Kapihan sa Senado noong Mayo 6, pinalutang ni Lacson ang isang hypothetical scenario kung saan ang Senado ay hindi makapag-convene ‘forthwith’ at ito ay kung ang mayorya ng mga senador ay boboto laban sa pag-convene ng kapulungan bilang impeachment court.
Iginiit ni Lacson na ang pag-convene bilang impeachment court ay bahagi ng constitutional duty ng Senado.
“If this constitutional issue arises, the Supreme Court may intervene to compel the Senate to perform our constitutional duty,” anang senador.
Hindi dapat aniya isipin na ang posisyon niyang ito ay pagboto para panagutin o iabswelto si Duterte.
“This position to oppose any attempt to block the convening of the Senate as an impeachment court has nothing to do with my decision to convict or acquit the respondent as I will always be guided by the evidence to be presented and nothing else.”
Ang Articles of Impeachment laban kay Duterte na inaprubahan na ng House Committee on Justice, ay naitransmit na sa plenaryo.
Sa oras na makakuha ito ng 106 boto mula sa 316 mambabatas ng Kamara ay ay ipapasa naman ang articles sa Senado.
Kamakailan ay sinabi ni Senate President Vicente Sotto III na ang mataas na kapulungan ay naghahanda sa anumang “eventuality,” at nagpaalala sa mga senador na maging patas sa oras na mag-convene bilang impeachment court. RNT/JGC
