MANILA, Philippines- Muling nanawagan ang Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) para sa agarang pagpapalaya sa mga tripulante ng MV Galaxy Leader na binihag ng Houthi group mula pa noong Nobyembre 2023.
Ang panawagan ay itinaon sa pagdiriwang ng 2024 World Maritime Day, pagkilala sa naging ambag ng Filipino seafarers sa “global peace and prosperity.”
“We take this opportunity to again echo the call of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United Nations Security Council, among others, for respect for the exercise of navigational rights and freedoms, and for the immediate release of the Galaxy Leader and its crew,” ayon sa DFA.
Sa ulat, 17 Pilipino ang kabilang sa mga binihag nang i-hijack ng armadong grupong Houthi ang isang barkong naglalayag sa Red Sea.
Sinasabing nilusob ng armadong grupo ng Houthi mula Yemen ang barkong galaxy leader na ayon sa grupo ay isang Israeli ship, bagay na mariing itinanggi ng Israel.
Samantala, pinasalamatan naman ng DFA ang global maritime sector sa pagkilala sa karapatan ng seafarers na tumangging maglayag sa designated high-risk areas.
“As we celebrate World Maritime Day, the Philippines calls on all States and stakeholders to reaffirm and mobilize action on their commitments towards promoting a safe, secure and sustainable maritime sector,” batay sa DFA.
“And let us all continue to advocate for the rights and welfare of our seafarers, ensuring that they are treated fairly, with dignity, and with respect,”dagdag na pahayag ng departamento.
Maliban sa karapatan ng mga mariro, pinagtibay ng DFA ang commitment nito na pangalagaan ang marine environment sa pamamagitan ng patuloy na promosyon sa United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea “as the constitution of the ocean.” Kris Jose
