MANILA, Philippines – Sinabi ng mga abogado ni Vice President Sara Duterte nitong Lunes na handa silang idepensa ang Bise Presidente sa Senado sakaling mag-convene ito bilang impeachment court matapos ang panibagong botohan ng House of Representatives para i-impeach siya.
Sa pahayag na ipinadala sa pamamagitan ni OVP spokesperson Atty. Michael Poa, sinabi ng legal team na handa silang humarap sa paglilitis kung saan kailangang patunayan ng prosekusyon ang kanilang mga alegasyon.
“While questions of constitutional significance remain pending before the Supreme Court, we are fully prepared to defend the Vice President before the Senate sitting as an Impeachment Court, where it is incumbent upon the Prosecution to discharge the burden of proof,” ayon sa pahayag.
Giit ng mga abogado, nasa mga nag-aakusa na ang obligasyon na patunayan ang kanilang mga paratang alinsunod sa Konstitusyon, batas, at rules of evidence.
“We are aware of the action taken by the plenary and with that vote to transmit the Articles of Impeachment, the burden now rests on the accusers to substantiate their claims in accordance with the Constitution, the law, and rules on evidence,” dagdag nila.
Sa botohan ng House of Representatives, inaprubahan ang impeachment laban kay Duterte sa 255 pabor, 26 tutol, at 9 abstention, lampas sa kinakailangang isang-katlo ng kabuuang miyembro.
Inaasahang ipapadala na sa Senado ang Articles of Impeachment, na may tanging kapangyarihan na dinggin at magpasya sa impeachment cases.
Naganap ito kasabay ng pagbabago sa liderato ng Senado, kung saan napatalsik si Senator Vicente Sotto III sa botong 13–10 at pinalitan ni Senator Alan Peter Cayetano bilang bagong Senate President. Santi Celario
