Kapatid ng ex-Cebu Gov. inaresto sa kasong Safe Spaces Act

CEBU, Philippines – Inaresto noong Huwebes ng hapon, June 11, si Byron Garcia, kapatid ng dating Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, dahil sa umano’y paglabag sa Republic Act No. 11313 o Safe Spaces Act (Bawal Bastos Law).

Ayon sa pulisya, tatlong bilang ng kaso ang isinampa laban kay Garcia. Inaresto siya ng Cebu Police Provincial Office at Talisay City Police Station sa Talisay Fish Port sa Barangay San Roque, Talisay City.

Nagpalabas ng warrant of arrest si Judge Jennifer Pepito-Nimaniwa ng Municipal Trial Court in Cities (MTCC) Branch 1 sa Mandaue City, at itinakda ang piyansang ₱108,000.

Ang reklamo ay inihain ni Dr. Elisse Nicole Catalan, anak ni kasalukuyang Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro.

Ayon sa ulat, naging kritikal si Garcia sa mag-ina sa social media matapos ang nakaraang eleksyon.

Giit ni Garcia, wala siyang alam sa detalye ng kaso ngunit kinumpirma niya ang arrest warrant at na ang reklamo ay mula kay Catalan.

Samantala, sa Facebook post noong June 12, sinabi ni Catalan:

“As a private citizen who has been subjected to conduct I believe violated my rights and dignity, I chose to stand up and seek accountability through the proper legal process,”

Dagdag niya, “This case is not only about me. It is about affirming that no one is above the law, and that every person deserves to be treated with respect, whether in public spaces, workplaces, educational institutions, or online platforms.”

Paliwanag pa niya, layunin ng Safe Spaces Act na protektahan ang mga indibidwal laban sa gender-based sexual harassment sa iba’t ibang lugar, kabilang ang online spaces.

“Today, on Independence Day, I am reminded that true freedom includes the freedom to live and participate in society without fear of harassment, humiliation, or intimidation,” dagdag ni Catalan. RNT/MND
