Kauna-unahang Muslim woman Senator Santanina Rasul pumanaw na

MANILA, Philippines – Pumanaw na ang kauna-unahang Muslim Filipina Senator na si Santanina Tilla Rasul sa edad na 94, ayon kay Senate spokesperson Arnel Jose Bañas.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of former Senator Santanina Tillah Rasul, a trailblazer, legislator, educator, and beloved mother and grandmother, on November 28, 2024,” saad sa pahayag ni Bañas.

Si Rasul ay naglingkod bilang senador mula 1987 hanggang 1992, at mula 1992 hanggang 1995.

Inakda ni Rasul ang walong batas bilang chairperson of the Committee on Civil Service and Government Recognition at Committee on Women and Family Relations.

Kabilang dito ang Republic Act 6850, na naggagawad ng civil service eligibility sa government employees na nakapagtrabaho sa career civil service position sa loob ng pitong taon; R.A. 6949 na nagdedeklara sa Marso 8 bilang National Women’s Day; R.A. 7192, na nag-aalis ng gender discrimination at nagbukas sa pintuan ng Philippine Military Academy sa mga kababaihan, at naglalaan ng pondo sa mga kababaihan sa lahat ng government agencies; at R.A. 7168 na nagpapataas sa Philippine Normal College bilang Philippine Normal University.

“Her life was a testament to her tireless dedication to public service, and her commitment to the empowerment of women and marginalized communities, particularly Filipino Muslims,” sinabi pa sa pahayag ng Senado.

“Her Senate career was marked by her steadfast commitment to advancing civil service and education reforms, promoting women’s and minority rights, and fostering peace in her homeland,” dagdag pa.

“Nina Rasul leaves an indelible mark not only on her family but also on the countless lives she touched through her decades of public service and unrelenting advocacy. Her memory will forever inspire those who strive for equality, education, and peace.” RNT/JGC
