MANILA, Philippines – Sinabi ni Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro na hindi mahalaga kung sino ang mamumuno sa impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte, maging si acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, o dating Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano.
Sa isang press briefing noong Huwebes, sinabi ni Luistro na may tiwala ang House prosecution panel sa proseso ng pananagutan ng Senado anuman ang maging presiding officer.
“This is not a question of who is the presiding officer, who are the senator-judges, who are the public and the private prosecutors,” aniya.
“Whether it is acting SP Win Gatchalian or Senator Chiz Escudero who will be presiding over the impeachment trial, on behalf of the prosecutors, we are expressing our faith and confidence in this accountability mechanism,” dagdag ni Luistro. Aniya, maging si Cayetano ay pinagkakatiwalaan din ng prosecution panel kung siya ang mamuno sa paglilitis.
Ipinaliwanag din niya na iba ang sitwasyon ng kasalukuyang impeachment case kumpara sa unang impeachment complaint laban kay Duterte noong 2025.
“To complete my statement, whether it is former SP Alan (Cayetano) or acting SP Win, or the one which you mentioned, Senator Chiz, we express our faith and confidence in accountability mechanisms,” sabi niya.
“Let us not judge him (Escudero) on the basis of what happened to the first impeachment back in the 19th Congress,” dagdag pa niya.
Si Escudero ang Senate President nang matanggap ng Senado ang unang impeachment complaint laban kay Duterte noong Pebrero 2025. Naging kontrobersyal noon ang umano’y pagkaantala ng proseso kaugnay ng salitang “forthwith” sa Konstitusyon.
Gayunman, kalaunan ay nagpasya ang Korte Suprema na labag sa Konstitusyon ang nasabing Articles of Impeachment dahil sa paglabag sa one-year bar rule.
Sa kabila nito, sinabi ni Luistro na handa ang prosecution panel na ituloy ang impeachment trial anuman ang maging lider ng Senado sa pagdinig ng kaso. RNT/MND
