MANILA, Philippines – Nagkaisa ang mga babaeng senador sa panawagan ng mas mataas at disenteng pasahod, kasabay ng pagdiriwang ng Labor Day ngayong Huwebes, Mayo 1.
Para kay Senador Pia Cayetano, ang matagal nang panawaagan ng maayos na pasahod ay isa rin umanong gender issue.
“Women continue to face lower pay, fewer opportunities, and a heavier load of unpaid care work. A fair wage helps ease that burden and honors the labor they give—both inside and outside the home,” pahayag ni Cayetano nitong Huwebes.
Inalala niya ang mga panahon na nakasalamuha niya ang mga kababaihan, partikular ang mga nanay na nagsabing nagpapalipas sila ng gutom para lamang makakain ang kanilang mga anak, o delay sa medical care “because there simply isn’t enough.”
Aniya, “No one knows better what it’s like to stretch every peso just to get through the day—budgeting for food, school expenses, and daily needs, than a mother.”
“We cannot talk about progress and leave behind those who carry the weight of our homes and our economy,” dagdag ni Cayetano.
“If we truly aim to become an upper-middle income country, our workers—and especially our women and mothers—must be at the center of that vision.”
Dahil dito ay ipinanawagan niya ang agarang pagpasa ng legislated wage increase na pending pa rin sa Kamara.
Noong Pebrero 2024 ay inaprubahan ng Senado ang proposed P100 daily wage hike para sa mga manggagawa sa pribadong sektor.
Ngunit noon lamang Pebrero nakaabot sa plenaryo ng Kamara ang counterpart measure na ngayon ay naghihintay pang maipasa sa ikalawa at huling pagbasa.
Samantala, muling ipinanawagan ni Senador Risa Hontiveros na sertipikahan na ng Malakanyang ang wage hike bill bilang urgent upang maaprubahan na ito ng 19th Congress bago pa ito mag-adjourn sine die sa Hunyo 13.
Ang Kongreso ay kasalukuyang naka-break at magbabalik ang sesyon sa Hunyo 2.
“If the 19th Congress ends without passing the wage hike bill, we’ll go back to zero,” ani Hontiveros.
Ganito rin ang pahayag ni Senador Grace Poe at sinabing ang wage increase ay “timely and meaningful gift” sa mga manggagawa lalo na sa tumataas na presyo ng mga produkto.
“Our fellow citizens are tightening their belts in every possible way just to make ends meet for their families. Let’s give them a chance to breathe and feel the fruits of their hard work,” saad sa pahayag ni Poe.
“Labor Day reminds us that decent work is the foundation of a just society,” ayon naman kay Senador Loren Legarda.
“Every worker must have the opportunity not only to earn a living, but to thrive in conditions where dignity is upheld, rights are protected, and opportunities for advancement are accessible,” dagdag pa niya. RNT/JGC
