MANILA, Philippines – Sinabi ng grupong Pamalakaya na ang pagbuo ng maritime council para tugunan ang tensyon sa West Philippine Sea (WPS) ay “redundant and insignificant” sa mga mangingisdang Pinoy.
Sa pahayag, kinwestyon ni Fernando Hicap, national chairperson ng Pamalakaya, ang pagbuo ng maritime council sa kabila na mayroon nang umiiral na inter-agency na
National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea, na mayroong kaparehong layunin.
“The government agencies belonging to the newly created National Maritime Council are already constitutionally mandated to uphold and protect our national territory and natural resources. Why the need to consolidate these agencies into a council with the sole purpose of maritime security, despite an existing task force with the very same functions? ” tanong ni Hicap.
Sumasalamin umano ang naturang hakbang sa paulit-ulit na pagpalya ng pamahalaan na protektahan ang WPS mula sa mga dayuhan dahil nagpapakita lamang ito na walang konkretong plano ang pamahalaan para ibalik ang full sovereign control sa lugar kasama ang lahat ng maritime resources nito.
“Until the fishing vessels and warships of China and other foreign countries are directly expelled from our waters, the initiative of the Marcos Jr. administration is pointless for the fishermen whose income and livelihood continue to fall or vanish,” ayon kay Hicap.
Ayon sa Pamalakaya, dapat ay nakabase sa independent foreign policy ang lahat ng hakbang ng pamahalaan na maibalik ang kontrol sa territorial waters ng bansa.
“It should be peaceful and diplomatic in accordance with the international tribunal that upheld our country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and extended continental shelf (ECS),” dagdag ni Hicap.
Noong Marso 25, inilabas ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ang Executive Order (EO) No. 57, na naglalayong “strengthen the Philippines’ maritime security and maritime domain awareness” sa pagbuo ng National Maritime Council.
Ang kautusan ay inilabas dalawang araw matapos ang pambobomba ng China Coast Guard gamit ang water cannon sa resupply boat ng Pilipinas sa resupply mission sa mga tropang Filipino sa BRP Sierra Madre na nasa Ayungin Shoal. RNT/JGC
