MANILA, Philippines- Sinabi ng Office of Civil Defense (OCD) na pinag-aaralan nitong i-develop ang kakayahang tumugon nang tama ang bansa sa forest fires o sa ibang kahalintulad na insidente.
Sinabi ni OCD administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, ang pag-upgrade ay kailangan kasunod ng hamon na nakasagupa ng mga awtoridad sa pag-apula ng mga wildfire sa lalawigan ng Benguet.
“We are looking for interventions that will support the ongoing response activities and of course for those measures that will offer long-term solutions to address the challenges and pressing concerns,” dagdag na wika nito.
Nito lamang Pebrero 26, nagpulong ang mga opisyal ng OCD, Bureau of Fire Protection, at Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) kasama ang United States Agency for International Development (USAID) para pag-usapan ang suporta ng US government para sa operasyon ng paglaban sa sunog.
Isang grupo naman ng mga eksperto mula sa USAID ang nagpunta ng Baguio City noong Pebrero 27 para magbigay ng technical support sa Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) – Cordillera Administrative Region para labanan ang sunog sa kagubatan.
Sa sumunod na araw, naglunsad naman ang USAID at US Forest Service Fire experts ng aerial inspection.
“It is vital, especially for the responders, to learn more strategies on how to combat forest fires. We are pushing for the advancement of our country’s capabilities in handling this type of emergency. OCD is committed to facilitating and providing necessary support to realize the improvements that we need for the betterment of the overall fire preparedness,” ayon kay Nepomuceno.
Kabilang naman sa mga pangunahing hamon sa “response operations” ay ang lokasyon ng forest fires kung saan hindi maabot o nahihirapan ang mga trak ng bumbero na maabot ang sunog sa gubat at kakulangan sa mga gamit ng mga responder.
Sa ulat, winasak ng forest fire ang nasa mahigit 1,000 ektarya ng bulubunduking lugar sa Tuba, Benguet.
Sa report, apat na katao ang nasagip mula sa apat na oras na sunog sa kagubatan ng Tuba.
Nabatid na ang sunog sa Tuba ay isa lamang sa pitong forest fires na tumama sa probinsya ng Benguet, kasama ang Itogon, Kabayan at Bokod. Kris Jose
