MANILA, Philippines – Sa harap ng tensyon sa Middle East, ipinanawagan ng ilang mambabatas sa House of Representatives ang agaran nang pagsuspinde sa pagpapataw ng excise tax upang maibsan ang pagtaas pa ng presyo ng langis.
Ayon kay House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman at Marikina Rep. Miro Quimbo hindi maaaring suspindihin ang excise tax sa langis sa pamamagitan lang ng aksyon ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos bagkus ay mangangailangan ito ng permiso mula sa Kongreso.
“I support calls to promptly suspend excise tax on fuel to protect our consumers amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and the strong possibility of rising global crude oil prices. However, this cannot be done through executive action alone under existing law, the President will need the authority from Congress to suspend the fuel excise tax,” paliwanag ni Quimbo.
Umaasa si Quimbo na agad kikilos ang Senado at Kamara para dito.
“Time was of the essence, given the volatile situation in Middle East following the United States (US) and Israel’s attack on Iran over the weekend. Now is the time to prepare before prices surge further,” giit nito.
Ganito ang posisyon ni Navotas City Rep Toby Tiangco, aniya, dapat masuspinde ang excise tax sa petrolyo upang hindi na ito magdulot ng domino effect sa presyo ng pangunahing bilihin.
“A temporary suspension of the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on fuel products is necessary to help consumers cope with the undue economic burden during this period of conflict,” paliwanag ni Tiangco. Gail Mendoza
