Lantarang kinalampag ni dating Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri ang administrasyon na lumikha ng tourism masterplan at magtakda ng specific amendments sa Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) bilang pagtugon sa krisis sa enerhiya.
Sa pahayag, sinabi ni Zubiri na dapat maging “crown jewels’ ng turismo ang bansa sa pamamagitan ng pagtugon sa krisis sa enerhiya na nararanasan ng maraming lugar partikular ang tourism areas.
Ayon kay Zubiri, lubhang apektado ng malawakang brownout na nararanasan sa ilang bahagi ng bansa partikular sa Mindanao, ang sektor ng turismo tulad ng Siargao, na pawang surfing capital ng Pilipinas.
“Kung may masterplan sa flood control, sana naman ay may masterplan din sa turismo (which will) focus on these tourist destinations that have been bringing income to our country,” ayon kay Zubiri.
Sinabi ng senador na dapat tiyakin ng malaking bahgi ng tourism masterplan ang pagkakaroon ng sapat at tuloy-tuloy na suplay ng kuryente hindi lamang para sa residente kundi maging sa negosyo na kumakalinga sa tourism industry.
Inihalimbawa ni Zubiri ang sariling karanasan nang magtungo sila ng kanyang pamilya sa Siargao na lubhang binalot ng kadiliman sanhi ng kawalan ng sapat na suplay ng kuryente.
“Grabe ang brownout doon. The resort where we were staying had to open its genset from 10 in the evening to 7 in the morning kasi nagfa-fluctuate yung kuryente sa Siargao. Ang binabayaran nilang kuryente is P16 per kwh, napakataas!” ayon kay Zubiri.
Naapektuhan din umano ang negosyo ng ice production sa lugar sanhi ng kawalan ng suplay ng kuryente.
“Ang punto ko po, unless we solve this problem of electricity, we will have a big problem with investment opportunities. And sana po nakikinig ang Department of Tourism, the Department of Energy and other departments concerned: (Siargao) is a crown jewel of our tourism destinations,” ayon kay Zubiri.
“We are probably paying one of the most expensive rates in all of Asia, maybe next to Japan. When you go to other countries, talagang napakababa ng presyo,” giit pa niya.
Dahil dito, sinabi ni Zubiri na kanyang isinusulong ang pag-amyenda sa EPIRA upang tugun ang problema sa palagiang brownout at mataas na halaga ng elektrisidad sa Pilipinas.
“And we now focus on the DOE, what amendments do you want, Mr. DOE? Until now, they have not submitted the amendments to the EPIRA,” aniya.
“Sana we have already the specific amendments, and I am glad that the gentleman from Cagayan de Oro is willing to work with the majority in trying to pass amendments to the EPIRA. Pero ang tanong ko po, ano yung mga amendments na yun, specifically?” tanong ng senador.
“Through the leadership (of the government), let’s ask them what those amendments are, because for the last two years I’ve been asking them that. It’s part of the LEDAC priority measures but (we don’t know the specifics),” dagdag ng mambabatas. Ernie Reyes
