MANILA, Philippines – Inihayag ni Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona nitong Miyerkules, Abril 17 na hindi nito ikinakategorya ang salapi ng Pilipinas na may “poor performance” sa pagsasabing ito ay dahil lamang sa mas lumakas ang halaga ng dolyar, dahilan ng peso depreciation.
Sa pulong balitaan sa Maynila, sinabi ni Remolona na ang piso ay nag-aadjust sa ilang mga kaganapan sa ibang bansa lalo na sa Middle East at ngayon ay sa mga sinabi ni Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell.
“I think it’s adjusting to Powell’s speech that maybe they won’t ease until September or September is kinda how people interpret what Powell said, so there’s a postponement of when the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) will ease, so that has meant the weakening of other currencies,” anang BSP governor.
“So it’s not the case of a weak peso, it’s the case of a strong dollar. Unless the movements are very sharp, we tend to allow the adjustment to happen,” dagdag pa niya.
Bumaba ng 19.2 centavos ang Philippine peso nitong Martes sa P57:$1, ang maituturing na ‘worst performance’ sa loob ng 17 buwan mula nang magsara ito sa P57.375:$1 noong Nobyembre 22, 2022.
Ito ay kasunod ng tensyon sa Middle East matapos na maglunsad ang Iran ng mga drone at missile sa Israel noong Sabado.
Pagdating naman sa epekto ng peso depreciation sa inflation, sinabi ni Remolona na ang paggalaw ay hindi naman magkakaroon ng malaking epekto, ngunit maaaring maging batayan sa susunod na policy meeting ng Monetary Board noong Mayo 13, 2024.
“The magnitude of the adjustment of the peso has not been large enough to affect inflation expectations so for now, I think the impact on Monetary Policy is, I would say, not large,” sinabi ni Remolona.
“It might be a factor depending on what happens between now and the next monetary policy meeting, but the adjustment so far is not gonna change what I think we might be doing,” dagdag niya. RNT/JGC
