MANILA, Philippines – Nanindigan sa matibay na suporta sa laban ng Pilipinas kontra HIV/AIDS ang Global AIDS coordinator ni US President Joe Biden na si Dr. John Nkengasong.
Kasabay nito, pinuri ni Nkengasong ang Pilipinas sa tinawag niyang ‘very important’ partner ng US sa rehiyon, sa paglaban sa HIV/AIDS dahil sa commitment nitong labanan ang sakit ‘at the highest level.’
“I’m very impressed by the political leadership that I found here,” ani Nkengasong.
Pinuri rin niya si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sa pagtutok sa isyu, batay sa kanyang 2023 State of the Nation Address (SONA) at sa pagsasabing ang paglaban sa sakit ay isang mahalagang polisiya ng kanyang administrasyon.
Samantala, patuloy naman na bubuo at popondo ng mga programa ang US na may kaugnayan sa pangangailangan ng bansa pagdating sa pagtugon sa AIDS.
“I am very encouraged that we have a country that is ready to partner with us, the United States, and to continue the fight against HIV AIDS,” sinabi ni Nkengasong, founder ng US Center for Disease Control and Prevention operations sa Africa.
“The Philippines continues to exercise the right leadership to fight a pandemic. It is not every day that a President in his state of the nation address point to a specific disease like TB and HIV and characterize that as alarming. I give a lot of credit to President Marcos for doing that,” dagdag pa niya.
Inilunsad ni dating US President George W. Bush noong 2003 ang PEPFAR na nakatulong nang makapagligtas ng mahigit 20 milyong buhay sa buong mundo.
Dito sa Pilipinas, sinabi ni Nkengasong na plano ng PEPFAR na mas palakasin pa ang kapasidad ng mga health official ng Pilipinas at local health facilities para mapangasiwaan at mapigilan ang HIV/AIDS.
Isinusulong niya rin ang active involvement ng mga kabataan at iba pang sektor sa pagpapakalat ng awareness sa mga komunidad, lalo na sa social media.
“To solve the problem, you have to acknowledge that there is a problem. And the government is acknowledging that,” aniya.
“HIV/AIDS is a very clever virus. It is a very silent virus. It is a common threat to us regardless of where you are in the world.” RNT/JGC
