MANILA, Philippines – Layon ng price ceiling na P50 kada kilo sa imported na bigas na maproteksyunan ang mga mamimili sa mataas na presyo kasabay ng nagpapatuloy na tensyon sa Middle East, ayon sa Department of Agriculture (DA).
Sa pahayag nitong Huwebes, Mayo 14, sinabi ng DA na ang price cap na ipinag-utos “is intended as a calibrated response to extraordinary market volatility.”
Sumusuporta rin ang price cap sa nagpapatuloy na hakbang ng pamahalaan para palakasin ang domestic rice production at pigilan ang speculative pricing increases.
Noong Miyerkules ay nag-isyu si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ng Executive Order No. 118 na nagpapataw ng price ceiling na P50 kada kilo sa 5-percent broken imported rice sa buong bansa sa loob ng 30 araw, o kung alisin ng Pangulo sa rekomendasyon ng
National Price Coordinating Council (NPCC).
Saad sa direktiba, layon nito “to address unjustified price increases, prevent market abuse, and ensure the availability of affordable rice while maintaining market stability.”
“We will implement this immediately once it takes effect to help the general public cope with rising food costs,” saad naman sa pahayag ni Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. nitong Huwebes, Mayo 14.
Nang hingan naman ng komento ay sinabi ni Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food, Inc. president Danilo Fausto na ang pinakahuling direktiba ng Pangulo ay magpapalakas sa farm-gate prices ng palay.
“The price will discourage importation of rice within 30 days that will concentrate traders and consumers to local supply even for 30 days only, increasing the demand of local palay and allow farm gate prices to increase at reasonable level for the farmers,” ani Fausto.
Masyado naman umanong maaga na tukuyin ang epekto ng price ceiling dahil kakaani pa lamang ng mga magsasaka, ayon kay Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura Executive Director Jayson Cainglet.
“The price cap on imported [rice] is a continuing admission (prior to the price cap was the imposition of MSRP) on the failure of unprecedented level of importation have not benefited our consumers,” sinabi ni Cainglet. RNT/JGC
