IT looks like the Second Gentleman, Atty. Man’s Carpio, would be all alone in defending himself amid the latest controversy linking him, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte and Michael Yang over the alleged smuggling of P11-B worth of shabu at the Manila International Container Port in 2018.
But then, he has no other options but to defend himself, since he really has a lot of explaining to do anyway.
Human nature, however, dictates that the wife would easily come to the defense of her husband or vice versa especially when he/she is aware of his/her extra-curricular activities.
But it’s a different thing now with the Vice President who earlier declared that she would only answer issues involving her and Carpio would do it himself.
Apparently to appease the ‘good gentleman,’ Sara quickly branded the issue facing her husband as ‘political harassment and attack.’
Echoing what she said, Carpio claimed that the drug importation issue is unmistakably politically motivated, and that the claims of former Customs intelligence officer Jimmy Guban were baseless and malicious.
The silence is clearly deafening on Sara’s inaction to defend her husband.
Sara could have easily pleaded the public on the character and innocence of her husband, that they wouldn’t get involved in such illegal activity, etcetera, etcetera.
Familial spirits should have been high considering that they have just come back from a trip in Germany (a highly irregular trip when the Philippines was suffering from flooding and torrential rains).
Nonetheless, the apparent silence or the lack of any statement defending her husband is louder than the evasive response of Sara.
It seems Sara’s ‘limited words’ are actually politically motivated as she doesn’t want to get entangled in the mess of her husband, in the hopes of preserving her non-existent political goodwill.
This is much as a calculated move on her part, preventing the issues that marred previous administrations – when then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo came to the defense of her husband Mike Arroyo over graft and corruption cases.
The Dutertes only protect their own and Mans Carpio, as an outsider of the inner family, is left on an island to defend himself.
