NAMATAAN ang Chinese structures at military equipment Subi Reef o Zamora Reef sa West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Dahil dito, nagmistulang siyudad na ang Subi Reef sa WPS dahil sa dami at laki ng mga istraktura ng mga military equipment na itinayo ng Tsina roon.
Ang Subi Reef ay bahagi ng continental shelf ng Pilipinas at malapit lang sa Pag-asa Island na sakop naman ng Palawan.
Ang mga istraktura at equipment ay namataan ng eroplano mula sa Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) na nagtse-check sa mga aktibidad ng Tsina sa Sandy Cay.
Ang naglalakihang istraktura, runway, radar domes, antennas, vehicles, at hangars ay nakita sa artificial island sa Subi Reef, na itinatag ng Tsina noong 2013.
“A wide deepwater shelter port was also seen in the area where Chinese ships can shelter amid big waves,” ayon naman sa ulat.
Namataan din ang Chinese maritime militia vessels sa palibot ng lugar.
Buwan ng Hulyo, sinabi ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) na opisyal na hiniling ng Pilipinas sa United Nations ang ‘entitlement to an extended continental shelf (ECS) ng bansa sa West Palawan Region sa WPS.
Ang hakbang na ito ay para ibasura ang massive claim ng Tsina sa South China Sea.
Noong Hunyo 14, nagsumite ang Philippine Mission to the UN in New York ng “information to the United Nations (UN) Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) to register the country’s entitlement to an extended continental shelf (ECS) in the West Palawan Region in the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea…”
Tinukoy ang Article 76 ng UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), sinabi ng Pilipinas na “a coastal State such as the Philippines is entitled to establish the outer limits of its continental shelf comprising the seabed and subsoil of the submarine areas extending beyond 200 nautical miles (NM) but not to exceed 350 NM from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured.”
Ang CLCS ay isang body o lupon na namamahala sa implementasyon ng UNCLOS sa pagtatatag ng outer limits ng continental shelf na lampas sa 200 nautical miles mula sa baselines. Kris Jose
