MANILA, Philippines – Ipinatitigil sa Supreme Court (SC) ang konstruksyon ng tulay na nag-uugnay sa Davao City at Samal Island bunsod ng panganib na idudulot umano nito sa kalikasan.
Sa 200 pahinang petition, nais ng mga petitioner na agad magpalabas ang SC ng temporary environmental protection order laban sa Samal Island-Davao City Connector (SIDC) Project dahil sa panganib na idudulot nito sa coral reefs sa Paradise Reef at sa Hizon Marine Protected Area.
Nagbabala ang mga petitioner na maaaring unti-unti o agaran nitong papatayin ang mga coral reef sa Davao gulf at sa ecosystem.
“The destruction of the coral reefs in the Davao gulf poses an actual threat to the thriving local communities. If the coral reefs that have been relied upon by peoples and ecosystems for centuries would die, it is a tragedy— where the powerful, the State itself, plays god,” nakasaad sa petisyon.
Hiniling din ng mga petitioner na magpalabas ang korte ng writ of kalikasan upang tuluyan nang matigil ang konstruksyon.
Nanawagan din sila sa SC na atasan ang mga respondent na magpatupad ng mga hakbang para maprotektahan at mapreserba ang mga coral reef sa Paradise Reef at sa Marine Protected Area.
Kabilang sa mga petitioner ay sina Ecoteneo Director Carmela Marie Santos, Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability Executive Director Mark Peñalver, Dyesabel Philippines chairperson Marvelous Camilo at ang Sustainable Davao Movement. TERESA TAVARES
