MANILA, Philippines – Muling nagbabala ang Department of Science and Technology (DOST) sa mga residente ng Eastern Visayas na maghanda sa posibleng malakas na lindol dahil itinuturing nang ripe o handa sa paggalaw ang Central Leyte Fault.
Sa Maghanda Summit sa Leyte Convention Complex, sinabi ni DOST-Phivolcs senior science research specialist Jeffrey Perez na mahigit 100 taon nang hindi gumagalaw ang 100-kilometrong bahagi ng fault line.
Umaabot ito mula Burauen hanggang Saint Bernard at may kakayahang lumikha ng magnitude 7.1 na lindol.
“There have been no movements of this fault since the Spanish colonization; it is capable of generating a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that will affect not just Leyte, but other parts of Eastern Visayas,” ani Perez.
Konektado rin ito sa 24-kilometrong fault line na gumalaw noong Hulyo 6, 2017, na ikinamatay ng apat katao at ikinasugat ng mahigit 100 sa Kananga at Ormoc City.
Ayon kay DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, patuloy ang pag-ipon ng tectonic pressure dahil nakakandado ng friction ang fault surfaces.
“Energy stored increases if it doesn’t move; at some point, it surpasses the friction threshold, leading to sudden movement and earthquakes,” ani Solidum.
Pinaalalahanan niya ang publiko na maghanda sa lokal na bersyon ng “Big One,” at sinabing may mga active fault sa bawat lalawigan ng bansa. Santi Celario
