MANILA, Philippines – Nagbabala ang international marine conservation group na Oceana tungkol sa posibleng kontaminasyon ng tubig sa paligid ng inactive Navotas Sanitary Landfill.
Ayon sa grupo, maaaring kumalat ang pollutants mula sa usok, landfill leachate, at runoff papunta sa mga daluyan ng tubig at dagat.
“Landfill leachate, the polluted liquid that drains from waste, along with runoff from rain and water from firefighting and flowing over the landfill, may carry contaminants into waterways leading to the sea,” ayon sa pahayag.
Sinabi ni Oceana campaigns at science specialist Diuvs De Jesus na ang pollutants mula sa usok ay maaaring bumagsak sa lupa at tubig.
Dahil dito, hinimok ng Oceana ang lokal na pamahalaan ng Navotas at ang Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) na bantayan ang kalidad ng tubig, sediments, at hangin.
Inirekomenda rin na suriin ng Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) ang shellfish at crabs na maaaring maapektuhan ng heavy metals at iba pang pollutants.
“Precautionary measures should be done especially in the affected areas,” dagdag pa ng grupo.
Samantala, sinabi ng environmental group na BAN Toxics na maaaring naiwasan ang sunog sa landfill kung nasunod ang tamang waste management at safety protocols.
“The fire could have been prevented if all parties involved exercised the precautionary principle, and ensured the landfill’s safe closure and rehabilitation,” ayon kay Jam Lorenzo ng BAN Toxics.
Noong Abril 10, nagkaroon ng sunog sa Navotas Sanitary Landfill na nagdulot ng usok at nakaapekto sa kalidad ng hangin sa Metro Manila at mga karatig lugar. RNT/MND
