MANILA, Philippines – Nanindigan ang Bureau of Immigration sa nauna nitong pahayag na may planong bumiyahe si Leyte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez ngunit hindi ito natuloy, kasabay ng pagtanggi sa alegasyong naglabas ito ng mali o mapanlinlang na impormasyon.
Sa pahayag nitong Sabado, sinabi ni BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado na nananatiling nakatuon ang ahensiya sa pagbibigay ng tama at responsableng impormasyon habang iginagalang ang due process at mga karapatang konstitusyonal.
“We remain committed to providing honest, accurate, and responsible public information while respecting due process and the constitutional rights of all persons,” sinabi niya.
Noong Hulyo 21, sinabi ni BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval na nakatanggap ang ahensiya ng impormasyon na may travel plans ang dating House Speaker “that did not push through.”
“The concerned party’s camp is aware of the existing derogatory records and the applicable restrictions. Should there be any actual attempt to depart, the Bureau will enforce the law accordingly,” sinabi ni Sandoval.
Hiniling naman ng kampo ni Romualdez, sa pamamagitan ng kanyang mga abogado, na bawiin ng BI ang pahayag dahil “unfairly created the impression” umano nito na nagtatangka siyang tumakas.
Pinahintulutan si Romualdez na bumiyahe noong Abril dahil sa medikal na dahilan, ngunit naglabas kalaunan ang Sandiganbayan 7th Division ng Precautionary Hold Departure Order laban sa kanya.
Ayon kay Viado, nakabatay ang tugon ng BI sa impormasyong hawak ng ahensiya noong panahong iyon at inilabas lamang bilang sagot sa lehitimong mga tanong ng media.
“The Bureau’s response referred to information available to the Bureau at the time and was issued solely in response to legitimate media inquiries. The Bureau did not initiate the public discussion on the matter,” sinabi ni Viado.
