MANILA, Philippines – Nasungkit ni Associate Justice Rodil V. Zalameda ang posisyon bilang bagong Supreme Court (SC) chief justice kapalit ni outgoing Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo.
Si Gesmundo ay nakatakdang magretiro, araw ng Biyernes, Nobyembre 6, 2026, sa edad na itinakda para sa compulsory retirement ng mga mahistrado.
Inanunsyo ni Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Acting Secretary Lino Cayetano na ang pagpili ng Chief Justice ay kabilang sa ‘most consequential responsibilities’ na ipinagkatiwala sa Pangulo sa ilalim ng Konstitusyon.
“Today, I am pleased to announce that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has chosen Supreme Court Associate Justice Rodil V. Zalameda to serve as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, succeeding Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo, who is set to retire tomorrow, November 6,” ang sinabi ni Cayetano.
“The Chief Justice leads an institution fundamental to our democracy, one entrusted with upholding the Constitution, protecting the rights of our citizens, and ensuring that justice is administered fairly and impartially,” aniya pa rin.
Bitbit aniya ni Justice Zalameda ang mahigit sa tatlong dekadang natatanging serbisyo sa justice system.
Mula sa mga unang taon ng kanyang pagiging court official at public prosecutor sa kanyang serbisyo sa Court of Appeals at sa huli ay sa Korte Suprema, inilaan nito ang kanyang professional life sa ‘administration of justice.’
Ang kanyang karanasan sa iba’t ibang antas ng judicial system ang nagbigay sa kanya ng komprehensibong pagkakaunawa sa mga korte at sa mga taong pinaglingkuran ng mga ito.
“In selecting Justice Zalameda, the President recognizes the importance of experienced and principled leadership in preserving public confidence in our judicial institutions,” ang sinabi ni Cayetano.
Sa kabilang dako, nagpahayag naman ng kumpiyansa ang Pangulo na maipamamalas ni Justice Zalameda ang responsibilidad ng Chief Justice ng may intergidad, walang kinikilingan at matatag na commitment sa rule of law.
“We congratulate Justice Zalameda on his selection and wish him well as he prepares to assume this important responsibility to the Filipino people,” ang sinabi ni Cayetano.
“We also extend our gratitude to Chief Justice Gesmundo for his dedicated service to the judiciary and our nation,” anito pa rin.
Nauna rito, inilabas ng Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), araw ng Huwebes, Oktubre 29, ang limang nominado para sa posisyon ng punong mahistrado ng Korte Suprema na papalit kay Gesmundo.
Kabilang sa shortlist sina Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen, Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, Associate Justice Japar B. Dimaampao, Associate Justice Rodil V. Zalameda at Associate Justice Jose Midas P. Marquez. (KRIS JOSE)
