Ito ang naging tugon ni Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin sa naging kahilingan at apela ni Nicholas Kaufman, abogado ni Digong Duterte na pabalikin na ng Pilipinas ang kanyang kliyente kapag ang kanilang request para sa interim release ay napagbigyan.
Tinukoy ni Kaufman ang edad at kondisyon ng dating Pangulo at kondisyon ng detensyon sa International Criminal Court (ICC) The Hague, Netherlands.
“I am not too sure how to respond to that because that’s outside of our purview. Whatever opinions supposed lawyers have about their respective clients, we leave it to them. We should not be made to react because we do not care about their comments,” ang sinabi ni Bersamin.
Sinabi ni Kaufman na si Digong Duterte ay “progressively deteriorating medical situation” na nakaapekto sa abilidad niya na intindihin ang mga ebidensiya at magbigay ng instructions.
“The defense sincerely hopes that the current administration, which [saw] fit to outsource its obligation to afford the former president a fair trial in the country of his birth, will now let him return home, with dignity, for the purpose of interim release until the end of all legal proceedings,” ang sinabi ni Kaufman.
Si Duterte, 80, ay nasa ICC custody simula pa Marso.
Buwan ng Agosto muling inulit nito ang kanyang kahilingan sa ICC para sa interim release sa Isang undisclosed country “subject to any conditions deemed appropriate.”
Sa kabilang dako, inanunsyo ng ICC , Araw ng Lunes na ang ‘confirmation of charges hearing’ para sa crimes against humanity case laban kay Digong Duterte ay ipinagpaliban matapos sabihin ng kampo ng dating Pangulo na siya ay “not fit to stand trial.”
