A POLICE chief’s first month in command can reveal his priorities. In Eastern Visayas, PBGen. Romano Cardiño has placed emergency response, intensified law enforcement and community service among his priorities.

Since taking over Police Regional Office 8 in September, Cardiño has pushed S.A.F.E. Eastern Visayas: DIAL 911, bringing an emergency response initiative he introduced in Negros Island Region to his new command.

S.A.F.E. stands for Seen, Appreciated, Felt and Excellent Police Service, reflecting his goal of making police assistance more accessible and responsive.

But the numbers from September also show the breadth of PRO-8’s enforcement operations.

The regional office reported 1,323 arrests during the month, including 472 wanted persons, among them 60 classified as most wanted.

Anti-drug operations resulted in 143 arrests and the seizure of illegal drugs worth approximately ₱2.47 million.

The campaign against illegal fishing produced another significant result, with 419 individuals arrested in 260 operations and fishing equipment valued at ₱14.74 million confiscated.

Operations against illegal firearms and explosives also led to 34 arrests and the surrender or confiscation of 371 firearms and explosives.

Beyond enforcement, Cardiño has emphasized command supervision and coordination. His official visit to the Leyte Provincial Police Office brought commanders together to review operations, address organizational concerns and improve police service delivery.

He has also assured media practitioners of timely access to legitimate, verified police information, recognizing the importance of transparency in public service.

These accomplishments give Cardiño a concrete starting point in Eastern Visayas. The next challenge is sustaining the pace, ensuring that emergency calls receive prompt attention and translating arrest figures into safer communities.

For Cardiño, the real test is consistency. A strong first month matters, but lasting public confidence will depend on results that residents can see and feel every day.
