MANILA, Philippines – Magsasagawa ng integrated research sa biodiversity conservation sa Recto Bank at Rizal Reef ang
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) sa Abril.
Ang research ay isasagawa sa pakikipagtulungan sa Marine Environment and Resources Foundation.
“We expect to discover more and measure the Philippine treasures in the ecosystems of the West Philippine Sea, a big part of our natural capital for the present and the future,” pahayag ni DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga sa kauna-unahang all-women maritime security forum na inorganisa ng Stratbase Institute sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa Australian Embassy sa Pilipinas.
Ani Loyzaga, nauna nang nagsagawa ang DENR ng Biodiversity Conservation and Carbon Sequestration sa West Philippine Sea Project sa Pag-asa Island noong Pebrero.
Ang West Philippine Sea ay may mayamang biodiversity na nag-aambag sa 27% ng commercial fisheries production ng bansa, at nasa 30% ng coral reef ng bansa.
Sa kabila nito, nanganganib ang likas-yamang ito dahil sa mga agresibong aksyon ng China.
Samantala, pinaplano ng DENR na magtayo ng marine scientific research station sa Pag-asa Island na bahagi ng walong istasyon sa biogeographic regions ng bansa.
Kabilang sa iba pang istasyon ay ang Tubbataha Reef Ranger Station at Snake Island Station sa Palawan, at Verde Island Passage Station na itatayo kasama ang pribadong sektor at academic and research partners.
Magsisilbi ang mga sentinel station bilang lugar para sa specific areas of collaboration na mga eksperto mula sa Pilipinas at iba pang bansa na rumirespeto sa rules-based international order.
“A leading and critical example of our strategic bilateral collaboration is our work with the government of Australia, under the new strategic partnership relationship, in developing science and policy leaders and scholars in ocean science and maritime security,” paliwanag ni Loyzaga. RNT/JGC
