MANILA, Philippines – HUMIRIT ang Department of Trade Industry (DTI) ng ₱200 million budget para sa pagtatatag ng Center for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) sa San Pedro Laguna.
“The AI center will house data scientists, researchers, and engineers whose AI projects will support the needs of MSMEs and startups, large companies and multinationals,” ayon kay DTI Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba sa deliberasyon sa Senado hinggil sa panukalang 2024 budget ng DTI at attached agencies nito.
“The goal of course is for us to become an AI center of excellence in the region in the near future,” ayon kay Aldaba ukol sa panukalang isinumite ng departamento.
Magbibigay ang center ng pagsasanay at capacity building ukol sa AI “so new products and services, IPs will come out to this center.”
Kapuwa naman kinumpirma nina DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual at Aldaba na pinagkalooban sila ng Aboitiz at UnionBank ng lugar sa San Pedro, Laguna subalit hanggang sa ngayon ay hindi pa ito magamit ng departamento bunsod ng ‘lack of resources.’
Ang suhestiyon naman ni Senator Loren Legarda na dapat ng simulan muna ng DTI ang AI research activities habang hinihintay na aprubahan ang imprastraktura.
Gayunman, sinabi ni Aldaba na walang sapat na lugar upang ganap na maisakatuparan ang research activities, sabay sabing kailangan nito ng supercomputers at pampasweldo para makapag-hire ng mga staff.
“We do a lot of workshops and seminars to help people become aware of the usefulness of adapting to AI technologies,” ang wika ni Aldaba.
Tinuran pa ni Aldaba na ang DTI ay mayroon ng AI roadmap at bumubuo na ng task force para gumawa ng governance framework na tutugon sa mga concerns na may kinalaman sa artificial intelligence.
“AI can also be used to promote bad things but what we are promoting is good AI and responsible AI,” anito.
Sa nasabi pa ring pagdinig, sinabi ni Pascual na kailangan na magpartisipa ng Pilipinas sa mas maraming nternational conferences para i-promote ang economic sector nito.
“Participation in international conferences. This will entail significant expenses so we need funding for these activities. We need to be seen and heard by prospective foreign investors,” aniya pa rin.
Samantala, ang panukalang 2024 budget ng DTI ay ₱7.909 billion, kabilang na ang ₱5.319 billion para sa Office of the Secretary at ₱2.341 billion para sa attached agencies nito. Kris Jose
