EMPOWERING OMBUDSMAN FOR REAL CHANGE

THE Ombudsman was created to protect citizens from corruption and abuse of power. Yet, for many Filipinos, it seems like the institution isn’t fulfilling its mission.

Filing a complaint should be straightforward, but for too many, the process is unnecessarily complicated. Citizens, whether teachers, jeepney drivers or farmers, are left wondering how they can report wrongdoing.

A body meant to protect the public should not create barriers to justice. It’s vital that the Ombudsman simplify the filing process, ensuring that anyone who needs help can seek it easily and without hesitation.

However, the challenge doesn’t end with just filing a complaint. Many citizens share frustration over the lack of progress after they’ve submitted their cases.

In some instances, it seems that nothing happens — no updates, no docket number, no resolution. This leads to the troubling perception that cases might be quietly archived, even though they may have merit.

For ordinary people, this can feel like the case is being quietly “put to rest,” with the assumption that some behind-the-scenes deal is being made.

The public often wonders: How much money was involved in settling the issue? This perception of inaction or delay only erodes trust in the system.

Moreover, the Ombudsman has often been seen as reactive rather than proactive. It’s a system where cases only gain attention after they’ve been filed.

This approach risks letting problems escalate to the point of no return. The Ombudsman should be vigilant, identifying potential issues before they grow into bigger problems. Early intervention can help stop corruption and abuse before it harms the people.

Equally critical is the Ombudsman’s need for independence. The office must be free from political pressure or outside interference.

Only then can it truly uphold its responsibility to the people, holding public officials accountable with fairness and integrity. For the Ombudsman to effectively serve its purpose, it must operate without fear or favor.

To restore the people’s faith, the Ombudsman must embrace real reform. Simplifying the filing process, ensuring swift action on complaints and maintaining independence are vital steps to strengthening its role as a defender of public rights.
