MANILA, Philippines- Umapela si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sa United States Congress na bilisan ang ‘reauthorization’ ng US Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program, kakailanganin para sa “preferential at duty-free entry” ng ilang Philippine products sa American market.
Sa pagsasalita ng Pangulo sa Philippine-US Business Forum sa Washington D.C., binigyang-diin nito na hindi lamang dapat na tinitingnan ang ugnayan ng Pilipinas at Estados Unidos sa konteksto ng “tanggulan at seguridad” kundi maging sa pamamagitan ng economic integration.
“For this reason, we appeal to the U.S. Congress to fast track the reauthorization of the U.S. GSP program which has benefitted beneficiary countries such as the Philippines,” ang pahayag nito.
“On the other hand, the Philippines is also a major market for US products, and in 2021, based on data from the US Department of Agriculture, the Philippines is the 8th largest market for US agricultural exports and the top market in Southeast Asia,” dagdag ni Pangulong Marcos.
Ang GSP ang pinakamalaki at pinakalumang US trade preference program na nagsusulong ng economic development sa pamamagitan ng pag-alis sa buwis sa libong produkto kapag imported mula sa isa sa 119 napiling “beneficiary countries at territories.”
Itinatag ito noong Enero 1976 sa ilalim ng Trade Act of 1974 para sa 10 taon at itinakda para sa renewal ‘periodically’ simula noon ng US Congress.
Nagbibigay ang programa ng oportunidad para sa mas maraming “poorest countries” sa buong mundo na gamitin ang kalakalan para lumago ang kanilang ekonomiya at makaalis sa kahirapan.
“The Philippines imported around $3.5 billion worth of agricultural goods from the United States in 2021,” ayon sa Pangulo.
Hindi na aniya nakagugulat na ang US agriculture at food exporters ay naglalayon na palawakin ang kanilang market access sa Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ng pagtataguyod para sa mas mababang taripa.
Sa talumpati pa rin ng Pangulo, tinukoy nito ang pangangailangan para sa bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at Estados Uniods.
