MANILA, Philippines – Lantarang sinopla ni Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero si Senador Imee Marcos matapos makitang ginagamit nito ang imbestigasyon ng Senado para sa sariliing promosyon sa ginagawang imbestigasyon sa pagdakip kay dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte.
Sa ginanap na pagdinig ng Senate committee on foreign relations, sinampahan ng kasong contempt ng senadora si Special Envoy on Transnational Crimes Ambassador Markus Lacanilao dahil umano sa pagsisinungaling.
Hindi ito pinaniwalaan ni Escudero, bagkus ibinasura ang contempt order upang maipakulong si Lacanilao saka ito pinalaya sa kustodiya ng Senado.
Dahil dito, pinagsabihan ni Escudero si Marcos na iwasan nitong gamitin ang Senado bilang platform para sa pansariling political objectives.
Ayon kay Escudero, hindi nabigyan ng due process si Lacanilao matapos itong kasuhan ng contempt dahil sa pagsisinungaling umano ng embahador hinggil sa isinasagawang imbestigasyon sa pag-aresto kay Duterte na nakulong ngayon sa The Hague sa kasong crimes against humanity.
Matinding pinalagan ng senadora ang kautusan ni Escudero na palayain si Lacanilao.
“Senate President Chiz Escudero refused to sign the contempt order. Just like he refused to sign the subpoenas. This time, he went even further—he ordered Lacanilao’s release, in spite of the ambassador’s blatant and repeated lies before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations,” ayon sa senadora.
Ngunit, tinugon naman si Escudero sa pagsasabing “the approval of the Senate President is not automatic nor ministerial simply because she desires it.”
“Senator Marcos released her statement and flaunted to the media her signed arrest and detention order even before I could see, much less, receive a copy of it,” ayon kay Escudero.
Aniya, pinalaya si Lacanilao para sa humanitarian consideration dahil ililibing ang kanyang lolo ngayon.
Pero, sinabi ni Escudero na nagpapalabas siya ng show cause order kay Lacanilao sa madaling panabon upang tanungin na ipaliwanag sa loob ng 5 araw kung bakit hindi siya puwedeng kasuhan ng contempt.
Ayon kay Escudero, kapag nagpaliwanag na si Lacanilao, doon lamang siya magdedesisyon kung lalagdaan ang detention order.
“The public we serve can rest assured that I will review the committee proceedings and that I will exercise my duty and discretion in accordance with the law to determine their propriety devoid of political agenda or motivation, and with the best interest of our people, country, and the Senate as an institution in mind,” ayon kay Escudero.
“I will not allow the Senate nor the Office of the Senate President to be used to further petty partisan interests, especially by those actively seeking reelection in coming May midterm polls,” giit niya.
Kinasuhan ng contempt si Lacanilao dahil paulit-ulit itong itinatangging kung dinala o hindi si Duterte sa national judicial authority bago ihatid sa The Hague.
