MANILA, Philippines – Inihayag ni Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian na nakatala sa prosecution panel kung gaano itatagal ang paglilitis kay Vice President Sara Duterte sa kasong paglulustay ng salapi ng bayan, betrayal of public trust, grave threat, at iba pa.
Sa pahayag, sinabi ni Gatchalian na maaaring matapos kaagad ang paglilitis kung makakapag-presenta ang prosecution ng “compelling evidence” na dokumentado upang mabawasan ang mahabang listahan ng saksi.
“That’s going to depend on the prosecution’s strategy. Right now, if you look at it, the ball is in their court. It hinges on what evidence they present,” aniya sa panayam ng media.
“If they already have rock-solid evidence, they may no longer need as many witnesses,” giit pa ng lider ng Senado.
Sinabi ni Gatchalian na tumatagal ang kasalukuyang usad ng paglilitis sanhi ng maraming testigo at nakapilang ebidensiya ng prosecution.
“The reason this is taking so long is because of the number of witnesses—there are more than 100. Plus, the pieces of evidence number in the thousands. In other words, we’re moving slowly because we hear only one witness a day,” aniya.
“But if the evidence presented is strong enough, I think they can reduce the number of witnesses,” ayon kay Gatchalian.
Nagsimula ang impeachment trial ni Duterte noong Hulyo 6 na wala pang sesyon kaya nakakpaglitis mula alas dos ng hapon hanggang alas siyete ng gabi. Sinuspinde ang paglilitis nitong Hulyo 27 at 28 upang bigyang daan ang State of the Nation Address President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at Kontra-SONA ni Senate minority leader Alan Peter Cayetano.
Nang simulan ulit ang paglilitis nitong Hulyo 29, pinagtibay ang bagong schedule na magkaroon ng sesyon mula 10 ng umaga hanggang alas tres ng hapon saka isusunod ang plenaryo ng Senado bilang legislative body.
Nakahain ngayon ang impeachment court ang 13 testigo sa Article 1 ng Articles of Impeachment na isinampa laban kay Duterte hinggil sa paglulustay ng P612.5 million na confidential funds. Ernie Reyes
