MANILA, Philippines – Pinag-aaralan ng kampo ni dating Negros Oriental congressman at murder suspect na si Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. ang ilang legal na hakbang kasabay ng posibleng deportasyon nito mula sa Timor-Leste.
Si Teves ay kinasuhan ng murder dahil sa pagpatay kay Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo noong Marso 2023.
Naaresto siya nitong Huwebes, Marso 22, habang naglalaro ng golf sa Dili.
Ayon kay Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, legal counsel ng dating mambabatas, pinalawig ng korte ang detention ni Teves ng 15 araw.
“Trial will resume on Monday. The TL [Timor-Leste] lawyers will then submit arguments in support of other options for Teves, including political asylum,” saad sa pahayag ni Topacio nitong Sabado.
“The TL legal team will meet tomorrow to explore other legal moves, including bringing the persecution of Teves to the United Nations [Human Rights Council],” dagdag pa niya.
Nauna nang humingi ng political asylum sa Timor-Leste si Teves noong Mayo 2023 nguni na-deny.
Ayon sa National Bureau of Investigation, si Teves ay isang pugante at ikinokonsiderang undocumented alien sa Timor-Leste kasunod ng pagkansela sa pasaporte nito ng Department of Foreign Affairs.
Sinabihan ni Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta ang mga representative ng NBI sa Dili tungkol sa kanyang “earnest desire for the immediate resolution of the case and emphasized the importance of expeditiously removing Teves from Timor-Leste.” RNT/JGC
