MALABON City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval led other key local officials in a four-day strategic planning workshop with representatives from national housing agencies aimed at strengthening the implementation of its housing and urban development initiatives.

“It’s also in line with the city government’s goal of providing better, safer, and more dignified housing for all Malabueno families.”

Sandoval said the workshop called: ‘Charting the Future 2025: Program Performance Review and Capacity Building for Local Housing Board and Other Concerned Offices’ was designed to strengthen institutional capacity and clarify strategic directions.

“Also, it’s meant to ensure that Malabon’s housing initiatives are evidence-based, aligned with regional and national priorities, and responsive to the complex realities of urban housing in the National Capital Region.”

Participants also engaged in a discussion which addressed major housing challenges such as rapid urbanization, population growth, limited land availability, and the growing impacts of climate change.

“In Malabon, our realities mirror these regional pressures. As of September 2025, we have 22,273 informal settler families, with 2,460 living along waterways. Being a low-lying, flood-prone city, our challenges go beyond shelter availability—they encompass safety, mobility, climate adaptation, and long-term resilience,” the mayor stressed.

Sandoval lauded the participation of representatives from the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, National Housing Authority, University of the Philippines, Organization of Socialized and Economic Housing Developers of the Philippines, Climate Change Commission, Public-Private Partnership Center of the Philippines, Social Housing Finance Corporation, Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG), Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the Philippine Commission for the Urban Poor.

The sessions helped CHUDD and the Local Housing Board develop knowledge-based, data-driven, and climate-responsive goals aligned with Malabon’s Executive-Legislative Agenda and ongoing national housing programs.

Since Sandoval assumed office in 2022, several housing programs have been implemented, including the construction of four 11-storey buildings that provided 365 new housing units designed to meet national standards and offer safe, dignified vertical homes within the city, among others.
