MANILA, Philippines – May kabuuang 42 witness na ang Office of the Ombudsman sa case-building laban kay dating House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez sa umano’y flood control kickback scheme.
Ayon kay Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano, ang bilang ay binubuo ng 28 bagong witness at 14 ex-bodyguard ni dating Ako Bicol Rep. Zaldy Co.
“Twenty-eight are the new witnesses that the investigators deemed necessary so that we can controvert the recantations. So that’s 28 new ones plus the 14 that had been remaining from the 18 [ex-bodyguards],” sinabi ni Clavano.
Aniya, mas tinututukan ng Ombudsman an kalidad ng pahayag ng mga witness sa halip na bilang.
“We don’t want this to be a numbers game. They (Romualdez’s camp) have 25 [witnesses], we have 42, but that’s not the point… it’s not yung pataasan ng number. Ang gusto naming malinawan dito ay quality po ng sinasabi ng mga tao,” aniya.
Susuriin ng opisina ang orihinal na affidavit at recantation sa nagpapatuloy na imbestigasyon.
“The fact that there are recantations or that affidavits were executed to the effect that they have reversed what they said in their first affidavit does not serve as an eraser of facts,” sinabi pa ni Clavano.
“The first affidavit will still be there but the second affidavit will now be paired with the first affidavit to determine which amongst the two is actually the truth,” dagdag niya.
Ang recantations ay maaari pang magpalutang ng karagdagang mga tanong para sa mga imbestigador lalo na sa iregularidad o kung mayroong panunuhol.
“It adds evidence. It does not reduce the evidence of our investigators.”
Itinanggi naman ni Romualdez ang mga alegasyon ngunit sinabi na susunod ito sa legal na proseso.
“Naninindigan akong wala akong ginawang anumang labag sa batas. At handa akong patunayan ito,” ani Romualdez. RNT/JGC
