MANILA, Philippines – Sa katwirang makaiiwas sa cancer deaths kung magkakaroon ng early detection, isang panukalang batas ang isinusulong ni Leyte Rep Martin Romualdez na magbibigay ng libreng screening sa breast, cervical, colon at prostate cancers na karaniwang tumatama sa mga Filipino.
Layon ng House No. 7942 o Cancer Risk Screening and Awareness Act na inakda ni Romualdez na mabigyan agad ng tulong ang mga Filipino na mascreen laban sa cancer bago pa man maging huli.
Tinukoy ni Romualdez ang datos mula sa Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) na nagsasabing ang sakit na cancer ang ikatlo sa sanhi ng pagkamatay ng marami sa mga Filipino.
“A major factor contributing to this alarming reality is the late diagnosis of cancer cases, which not only reduces survival rates but also imposes severe financial hardship on affected families. Studies reveal that treatment of late-stage cancer can consume more than 30 percent of a household’s income, often pushing families into financial catastrophe,” ani Romualdez.
Sa ilalim ng panukalang Cancer Risk Screening and Awareness Act ang sakop ng early detention programs ay ang breast, cervical, colorectal at prostate cancers subalit maaaring mapalawig pa ito depende sa rekomendasyon ng National Integrated Cancer Control Council.
Sa pangangasiwa ng Department of Health(DoH) sa pakikipagkoordina sa mga LGUs, municipal o city health centers at rural health units ay magsasagawa ito ng regular at periodic barangay-based cancer screening na libre o subsidized, ang prayoridad ay ibibigay sa mga indigent at nasa high-risk population.
May mandato din ang DOH na magestablisa ng referral mechanism upang ang mga pasyente ay tiyak na magkakaroon ng confirmatory diagnosis at treatment gayundin ay titiyakin na makakakuha ng PhilHealth benefits at iba pang logistical support services ang magpopositibo sa cancer test. Gail Mendoza
