 PATRIOTISM BEYOND UNIFORM OR TITLES

NO individual or group can claim sole ownership of love for one’s homeland. I vividly recall the words I heard from Senator Juan Ponce Enrile many years ago, which succinctly capture this sentiment: “No one has monopoly on love of country.” While it is natural to admire those in uniform for their unwavering commitment and the risks they face every day, it is important to acknowledge that patriotism extends far beyond military service.
In reality, love for one’s country knows no uniform and transcends the boundaries of occupation or status. Civilians, in their diverse roles, play a vital role in upholding the values of patriotism. Consider, for example, the courageous journalists who recently embedded themselves with the Philippine Navy and Philippine Coast Guard during a rotation and resupply mission to the Ayungin Shoal. Their bravery in reporting the realities of conflict zones demonstrates a deep love for country, driven by the pursuit of truth and accountability.
Many other civilians engage in acts of service, both visible and unseen. Non-government organizations, such as the Mindanao Humanitarian Volunteers for Peace and Lingkod Timog, contribute to the nation’s well-being by conducting humanitarian missions in remote and underserved areas across the country.
Notable figures such as Sarah Geronimo and Marian Rivera demonstrate unwavering support for their spouses Matteo Guidicelli  and Dingdong Dantes, respectively, who exhibited a profound desire to serve the country by enlisting in the reserve force despite their hectic schedules. From volunteering in community initiatives to advocating for societal equity, these individuals exemplify a deep-seated commitment to their fellow Filipinos and the nation as a whole. Although the efforts of many often go unnoticed or are unheralded, they play a crucial role in inspiring fellow Filipinos and shaping the collective spirit of patriotism.
Indeed, patriotism is not confined to the uniformed or those in positions of authority. It is a sentiment ingrained in the hearts of people from all walks of life, transcending professional titles and societal labels. Whether displayed through acts of valor or gestures of compassion, patriotism manifests in diverse and meaningful expressions., To foster a culture of patriotism, let us honor and appreciate the contributions of both uniformed personnel and civilians.
By recognizing that love for one’s country is not exclusive to any particular group, we promote inclusivity and solidarity within society. Embracing the notion that patriotism is a shared responsibility empowers every individual to contribute to the collective advancement of the nation.
