MANILA, Philippines – Isang buwan bago ang pagsisimula ng termino ni US President Donald Trump, naghahanda na ang siyam na konsulado ng Pilipinas sa Estados Unidos para tulungan ang mga undocumented Filipino na nais umuwi sa Pilipinas.
Ayon kay New York Consul General Senen Mangalile sa panayam ng GMA News, handa silang tumulong sa mga Filipino na maaapektuhan ng mass deportation at bagong immigration policies na inaasahang ipatutupad sa paparating na administrasyon ni Trump.
Naglaan ang Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ng pondo sa pamamagitan ng Assistance to Nationals (ATN) section ng bawat konsulado sa US para sagutin ang plane tickets ng undocumented Filipinos na nais makauwi sa Pilipinas.
“Filipino citizens in the US who need help for repatriation may be eligible to access the ATN Fund. Once they have made the decision to go home, they may visit our Assistance to Nationals Section, which is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. They can also consult via email at [email protected]. In cases of urgent need, our mobile hotline is (917) 294-0196.”
Idinagdag ni Consul General Mangalile na handa rin ang kanilang mga staff para iproseso ang kinakailangang dokumentasyon sa mga Filipino na nais makauwi.
Siniguro naman niya sa undocumented Filipinos na wala silang dahilan para matakot at lumapit sa konsulado.
“We want to reassure our kababayan that the Consulate, as an agency of the Philippine government, is committed to assisting Filipino citizens regardless of their immigration status.
We will assist within the bounds of what we can legally do, as far as the resources that the DFA can make available to us will allow, and with due respect to US laws.”
Ayon sa Department of Migrant Workers, mayroong 370,000 undocumented Filipinos na kasalukuyang naninirahan sa US.
Karamihan sa mga Filipino and Filipino Americans ay matatagpuan sa California, Hawaii, New Jersey, Texas, Illinois at Washington DC. RNT/JGC
