MANILA, Philippines- Ipinagtanggol ng France ang free trade agreement sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at European Union sa gitna ng isinusulong ng administrasyon ni US President Donald Trump na reciprocal tariffs na nakaaapekto sa dose-dosenang trading partners.
”We do believe in cross-trade. We do believe in cross-investment. And this is the first purpose of my visit here in Manila. We are also nowadays in a context where the European Union is working with the Philippines for a future free trade agreement,” ang sinabi ni Laurent Saint-Martin, France’s Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and French Nationals Abroad.
Ipinahihiwatig ng data mula sa Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) na ang France ay nasa listahan bilang third-largest importer ng Philippine products sa hanay ng EU countries.
Bagama’t ang Philippine imports ay mas marami sa Estados Unidos, ang local economy ay produktibo rin, pag-export ng hanay ng mga kalakal sa US market.
Makikita sa data ng PSA na kinakatawan ng Estados Unidos ang pinakamalaking export market ng Pilipinas, na may export value na umaabot sa $12.14 billion, katumbas ng 16.6% ng total exports ng bansa noong 2024.
May ilang ekonomista ang nagpahayag na mahalaga para sa Pilipinas na pagiba-ibahin ang export markets nito.
Sinabi ni Michael Ricafort, chief economist ng Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., na: “We need to diversify because we are too concentrated on the US… and they are the ones imposing tariffs, while other countries do not.”
Ang mga produkto ng Pilipinas ay ini-export sa France at iba pang EU countries kabilang na ang electronic goods gaya ng semiconductors, coconut oil, machinery, transport equipment, at manufactured goods, kabilang na ang tuna.
Sa nasabing talakayan ukol sa potensyal na pagpapalawak sa France bilang alternative market sa Estados Unidos, sinabi ni US, Saint-Martin na, “When I say that we have to increase cross-trade, of course it means export and import both ways. We are working on this FTA, and once again, it’s a European competency, but this is the best way to increase our cross-trade relationship.”
”I’m pretty sure we can export more here as French companies, and we can import more Philippine products. It just depends on the sector, what kind of products or services are involved, and on what purpose and conditions. This is the purpose of the FTA.” aniya pa rin.
Bagama’t ang France ay hindi ang kasalukuyang major export partner para sa Pilipinas, nagpahayag naman ito ng interes na makisali sa Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC). Ang LEC ay isang major infrastructure at investment project naglalayong paghusayin ang connectivity sa hanay ng mga mahahalagang economic hubs, kabilang na ang Subic Bay, Clark, Metro Manila, at Batangas.
Araw ng Huwebes, si Saint-Martin ay nag- courtesy call kay Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr., binigyang-diin ang shared values at pagsunod ng dalawang bansa sa international laws.
