MANILA, Philippines- Inihayag ng ranking naval official nitong Martes na ang sitwasyon sa West Philippine Sea (WPS) ay hindi na normal dahil sa patuloy na agresyon ng China.
Sa isang press briefing sa Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, sinabi ni Philippine Navy (PN) spokesperson for the WPS Commodore Roy Vincent Trinidad na hindi sila magpapatinag sa “clear and present challenge” mula sa mga aksyon ng Beijing, partikular sa patuloy nitong pagtatangkang harangin ang mga misyon ng Manila para maghatid ng supply sa outposts sa mga katubigang ito.
Ani Trinidad, matagal nang nagsasagawa ang PN ng maritime patrols sa lugar at naging hamon lamang ito nang maglagay ang China ng markers sa Philippine-held shoals at features noong 1992.
“If we look at the historical context of it, from 1992 when they started erecting markers on our shoals, shallow waters, reefs, our features in the WPS, in 1994 they prevented access to Mischief Reef. In (the) late 90s they started erecting fishermen’s structures in Mischief Reef, in 2011 they started reclamation, then they militarized the area, they declared an ADIZ (air defense identification zone) so it is not anymore normal, it is now the new paradigm or the new environment that the PN and the Western Command, and Naval Forces West operate in in the WPS,” pahayag ng opisyal.
Hanggang nitong Lunes, sinabi ni Trinidad na mayroong 43 Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) at Chinese maritime militia vessels sa WPS.
Kabilang dito ang apat na CCG ships at 17 fishing vessels sa Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal)
Sa Ayungin Shoal, dalawang CCG vessels at apat na fishing vessels ang namataan habang sa Pagasa, isang CCG at 15 fishing ships ang natukoy. RNT/SA
