MANILA, Philippines – Nanawagan ang Pilipinas na agad mabuksan muli ang Strait of Hormuz sa gitna ng epekto ng digmaan sa Middle East sa pandaigdigang suplay ng enerhiya at presyo ng langis.
Sa panayam ng AFP sa Paris nitong Miyerkules, sinabi ni Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. na napakahalaga ng agarang pagbubukas at pagpapanatiling ligtas ng naturang mahalagang daanan para sa mga marino at mamimiling Pilipino, habang patuloy na tumataas ang presyo ng oil at gas sa buong mundo dahil sa sigalot.
“It is of vital importance to us that the Strait of Hormuz be opened immediately and kept safe,” ani Teodoro.
“Not only for the seafarers, but also for Philippine consumers. The poor Filipinos who need to pay astronomical prices for electricity, fuel, and power. I think the effects are worldwide.”
Halos isinara ng Iran ang Strait of Hormuz mula nang magsimula ang digmaan noong Pebrero 28 kasunod ng US-Israeli strikes, dahilan upang sumirit ang presyo ng langis at gas sa pandaigdigang merkado.
Noong Martes, nagdeklara si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ng state of national energy emergency dahil sa banta sa suplay ng fuel at katatagan ng enerhiya sa bansa.
Ayon kay Teodoro, dapat nakabatay ang mga kondisyon sa muling pagbubukas ng strait sa magiging minimum requirements ng mga insurer at shipowner, dahil mahihirapang gumalaw ang mga barko kung walang sapat na insurance coverage.
“What will the insurers require as a minimum to insure the vessels? And we proceed from that. Because without adequate vessel insurance, maritime insurance, nothing will move,” ani niya.
“So let’s see their comfort zone. Let’s see the comfort zone of the ship owners. And we work from there,” dagdag pa niya habang nasa sidelines ng isang security and defense forum sa Paris.
Nauna nang sinabi ni French President Emmanuel Macron na maaaring tumulong ang France sa pag-escort sa mga barko sa strategic waterway, ngunit hindi ito posible “in the current context.”
Aabot sa 30 bansa, kabilang ang France, Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, at Japan, ang nagpahayag ng kahandaang “to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”
