MANILA, Philippines – Nilinaw ni Senador Francis “Chiz” Escudero na walang magaganap na postponement sa barangay at Sangguniang Kabataan sa Nobyembre taliwas sa kumakalat na balitang may panukalang batas sa Kongreso.
Sa pahayag, nilinaw ni Escudero na layunin ng Senate Bill No. 2387 na ayusin at hindi palawigin o isuspinde ang termino ng mga opisyal ng barangay at SK.
Kundi, aniya, nakalatag ngayon sa Senado ang naturang panukala upang gawing fix term ang kanilang panunungkulan mula apat tungo sa limang taon upang maitaguyod ang katatagan at pagpapatuloy ng pamamahala sa barangay.
“My bill does not extend. My bill fixes,” aniya sa ginanap na public hearing ng Committee on Local Government nitong Lunes, August 24, 2026.
“The natural effect will, of course, be to postpone the upcoming election, but the subject matter of this bill is fixing the term,” paliwanag niya.
Naniniwala si Escueero na kapag naitatag ang fixed five-year term, tuluyan nang mababasag ang paulit-ulit na congressional postponement at maiwasan na sumabay ang local elections sa national elections.
“Under the proposed measure, the transition would count existing terms to ensure fairness, preventing incumbent officials from benefiting from a term extension. The bill also seeks to enable local leaders to focus on long-term community development, disaster response, and peace and order without the disruptions of frequent elections,” ayon sa panukala.
