CHINA’S PROGRESS THROUGH THE EYES OF A TRAVELER

ALTHOUGH the contentious West Philippine Sea issue cannot be overlooked, it is
impossible to disregard the immense global influence that China has gained.

As a frequent traveler who has been fortunate enough to witness the grandeur of
China's advancement, I was left speechless as I marveled at the endless stretches of
highways adorned with stunning golden blossoms on my way to a luxurious hotel in
Guangzhou courtesy of my friend, Season’s Travel owner Marilyn De Mesa. These
remarkable sights, rarely witnessed by many, shows the massive infrastructure projects
within China.

In addition to being mesmerized by China's progress, my travels along its countryside
allowed me to observe the harmonious blend of the old and new that permeates the
Chinese’s daily life.

It was fascinating to savor exotic Chinese cuisine found in local restaurants. I also came
across many traditional latrine-style restrooms along the way.  This showcases China's
ability to preserve its cultural traditions even as it progresses even more toward
modernization. These encounters serve as a powerful reminder that development need
not come at the expense of rich heritage and valued traditions.

The relationship between China and the Philippines is both vital and complex,
surpassing mere issues of sovereignty and the West Philippine Sea. Many Filipinos
have Chinese ancestry, fostering strong friendships and familial bonds between our
nations.

Significant cultural exchanges between the two countries, such as those facilitated by
internationally renowned organizations like Lion’s Club and Rotary International, have
played a pivotal role in deepening our understanding and appreciation of each other's
heritage.

Collaborations in education, student exchanges, and scholarships have provided
Filipinos with the opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese culture, thereby
strengthening the bonds between our two nations.

China's undeniable positive influence has brought about significant changes that have
greatly benefited the Philippines across several fronts. Economic cooperation from
China has invigorated our economic growth, spurred infrastructure development,
encouraged technological advancements, and fostered valuable cultural exchanges.

Collectively, these endeavors have propelled the Philippines toward a more promising
future, even as ongoing disputes over the West Philippine Sea and sovereignty claims
cast a shadow upon our efforts.

As we celebrate the joyful occasion of Chinese New Year, I extend my warmest
greetings to all, particularly to our Filipino-Chinese community in the country.
